The problem with Palm Oil

palm oil campaignDemand for palm oil, a main ingredient in food products as well as cosmetics, is driving deforestation in countries such as Indonesia, forcing indigenous people off their land and pushing animals like orangutans to the brink of extinction.

The cosmetics industry uses approximately 6-7% of the global supply and palm oil is increasingly being used as a fuel source, but the majority of the world’s palm oil is used in food items such as crisps, bread, biscuits and ready meals.

With demand for palm oil increasing and the problem only getting worse, Lush Cosmetics decided that the only responsible thing was to remove palm oil from their products. By switching to a palm-free soap base and palm-free glycerin Lush have already cut their usage by 350,000kg each year.

Lush Cosmetics is urging other retailers and manufacturers to cut their use of palm oil, but the real change starts with consumers. Please take a stand and avoid palm oil wherever you can.
